It all comes down to message to market match. It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year!

I was reminded of this song today by Andy Williams today and it inspired me to write this post.

Now I know your wondering, what does best tomato planter and building my home business have to do with each other?

Let me explain.

Bet before I get to that, let me ask you a couple of questions…

What does the holiday time of the year mean to you and your business?

Is it a time of…

Growth?

Celebration?

or Hibernation?

For most people, this time of the year is all about Hibernation for their business.

They put it to sleep and wake it back up in the new year. Sound familiar?

Now don’t get me wrong…

I am all for Celebration, Relaxation, Downtime, and being with Family and Friends.

That’s why you are in this industry to start with RIGHT?

But what I am not up for is to put by business to rest at a time when it is best to keep it going…

1. You Have More Of A Chance Of Being Noticed.
Let’s face it… Most people are hibernating and sleeping when it comes to their business during the holiday season. This is a perfect time to be seen while others are not marketing and promoting their stuff. Can you say ‘Window of Opportunity’!!!

2. Not Everyone Is Sleeping… People Are Still Looking.
Ok… although most home business owners are sleeping during this time, the people who are looking for opportunities in this industry certainly are not. I would even hedge a bet that they are looking even more actively during this time of year to be able to find something to help them through the season with their family. Not everyone is as happy and cheery as you see on the T.V. specials and holiday movies. There are people out there waiting for you to show up and help them. Go find them.

3. Holiday Parties, Mixers, Functions, and Gathers.
This is my favorite thing during the holiday season. Who says that working your business can’t be fun. I certainly do not believe that. Do you? All of these events that you are booked for are great ways to meet new people and build new relationships. Use them to build up your Rolodex of new partners and customers that you can contact in the new year about what you are doing. Yes, don’t prospect them on the spot, just create the connection, get their contact info, and follow up with them when they are back to working mode in their life. Fun and business all wrapped up into one!

How does it get any better than this?

So…

Don’t put your business in hibernation mode this holiday season and get yourself positioned for 2012 to kick off with a BANG!

Is affiliate marketing part of your business?

It is a key to success of most of the top earners in the online world and a great piece to add to the mix. Just think about it… You can get paid for offering someones valuable products to your customers. They’re going to buy it from someone. Why not you?

But there are some pitfalls that you need to be aware of and try to avoid.

Here are the 5 most common ones that plague most people who fail at affiliate marketing:

1. Do not promote an affiliate product that you have no interest in.
This one is simple. If you don’t have an interest in a product or service, it is likely that your customers do not also. So adding this to your marketing program will result in no sales or income. Even worse, it could confuse some of your customers and have them not buy from you ever again.

2. Not researching the affiliate program first.
Pain and simple, do your due diligence and homework on a product or service before you start to promote it. Here are some must ask questions that you need to consider: Who created it? Who else is promoting it? What is their history of creating great products? What is their reputation in the market place? Will associating myself with this product or service enhance my customers lives when they purchase it from me?

3. Going with an affiliate with bad commission structures.
Make sure you look at the commission structures. Most affiliate programs offer between 20 – 40% commissions, with the average being 30%. Also, make sure you are clear on when you will get paid. Some are instant, others are within a couple of months based on their refund policy. Commission structure aside, always make sure that what you are offering to your customers will add value to them.

4. Not researching the product.
Do not promote a product unless you have done your research and purchased or reviewed them. Having reviewed a product that you believe in will allow you to make a stronger marketing campaign for it and hence get greater results in sales when you offer it to your customers.

5. Do not overtax yourself.
Do not spend all of your time in your business promoting other peoples products. This can be a great way to get started, but make sure that in your plan you start to move towards creating your own products and adding other services into the mix for your customers that will generate different income streams.

Avoiding these mistakes will all you to create a successful affiliate marketing income stream to your business. Make sure that your customer comes first and that you consider all things so that what you are offering adds value to them and your bottom line. The more that people trust you and the products you are promoting, the more likely they are to buy from you.

Have You Perfected Your Story For Your Network Marketing Business?

Network marketing is all about being able to tell stories.

Look at all of the leaders, they are all master story tellers.

People relate to other people and things best through engaging stories.

Ones that paint a picture in your mind and take you on the journey as if you were with them.

Next time you are on one of the Guru Webinars of the top leaders in the industry, or even at one of your companies local hotel meetings, watch how the leaders and presenters share their stories.

The most important story for you to share with others, is the one that you speak when you first meet someone. You have at most 60 seconds to make a lasting first impression, and in fact it is in the first 7 seconds of speaking to someone that they will decide whether they should continue to listen to you.

When I was going around looking for venture capital investors in the late nineties to build my technology company, we called this the 60 second pitch or elevator pitch. In fact in those days, sometime we would only get 10 minutes to do an entire presentation where we were asking for $5 million dollars in funding. So why do people spend an hour presenting to someone where the investment is only a few hundred dollars? Will leave that for another post.

Back to the story telling….

Are you prepared to introduce yourself at your next networking event when someone asks:

“What do you do?”

Here are 5 tips you can use for developing an attention getting story for your next networking event:

1. Start With The First 10 Seconds. What if 10 seconds is all you get? Does your first sentence tell your listener enough so they understand what you do and inspire them to want to know more? Here’s the simple, but effective approach. “I work with [type of clients] who have [these types of problems, issues or challenges].” That’s it. Don’t try to sugar it up or make it real catchy.

2. Avoid the What You Are Approach. “I’m a social media consultant” or “I’m a marketing consultant” or “I’m an Internet Marketer” or “I’m a distributor with…”. You’ve heard them time and again. You’ve probably even done it yourself. The problem is your listener(s) may not understand what the title means or even worse they may fill in an incorrect definition.

3. Avoid the What You Do Approach. “I do small business accounting including sales tax and payroll” or “I provide business owners with mentoring and training in comprehensive strategies to improve bottom line results…” Tends to be boring and doesn’t help the listener(s) understand what they get as a result.

4. Say How You Solved a Problem or Served a Client. Reinforce your first 10 second sentence with a second sentence that shows how you solved a problem or overcame a particular issue or challenge. “I help mid-sized accounting firms plan big conferences on a small budget. I just recently lined up free live entertainment for a firm that hosted 500 people in town last week.”

5. Tell Them Why You Are Unique. What makes you stand out from the crowd? Maybe it’s a unique model or approach for better results, focus on a specific niche, a guarantee, or extras that others don’t provide. There are many ways to define your uniqueness that will help gain attention and make you memorable.

Make your introduction an attention getter. Start with the first 10 seconds. You can always build from there once it starts getting attention. Actually write it down and practice out loud several times until you can just say it naturally.

You only have one time to make a first impression.

Let me explain…

When I was building my technology business, I had the blessing to meet with many successful entrepreneurs and senior executives of some very large companies. I would look at how they were building their business, each of them had a market and industry research group that would analyse the market and determine the current needs of their customers, how to attract additional customers, and the trends for future products and offerings. Once these were determined, they would position themselves in front of those customers and deliver exactly what they were looking for and presto, they buy what they are offering. Now they did not always get this right, but it is the approach they were taking that is more important than their success.

So lets take a look at how most people approach a home business opportunity. They pick a home business opportunity to get involved with because they are so excited about the products or services they are offering. And then, without any market research, planning, or understanding of how to communicate about their message, they start running around trying to convince everyone that what they found is the greatest thing in the world. I know that word of mouth advertising and recommendations are awesome, but for some reason it does not work for most people when they get started in their business. The result is that most of the people give up, quit, and tell everyone that this type of business doesn’t work.

So why the difference in the approach to business?

Whether planning to build a part time residual income or a multi-million dollar business, why do most people believe that the methods used by so many successful ‘traditional’ businesses is not for them?

Why do they build their business backwards?

Want to have the best success in your home business opportunity. Take a page out of the marketing books of successful companies that have gone before you. Build your business forward!

Here is how you do it…

1. Find a hungry buying audience.

2. Source the products and services that this hungry buying audience is looking for.

3. Put the products and services in front of them.

Then just sit back and watch the sales come in. It is really that simple.

And guess what? You don’t even need to be a sales person to do it!

Do you have to get it right before you get it going?

How many times in your business have you waited until you knew exactly how to do something before you did it?

This doesn’t sound like perfection to me.

In fact, it sounds like a lot of… can I say it… FAILURE!

So do you really believe that you need to get it right when in fact that the path that has lead to the greatest things being created in this world are full of failures?

Sounds like the most important thing for you to do in your business is just get doing it.

Now don’t get me wrong, you need to have a plans, strategies, and vision of where you are going.

But what you don’t need is all of the details of how you are going to get there.

Just having the first step is enough to take it.

One of my mentors always says…

“You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going!”

When looking at most people who start a home business, there are two distinct states that they operate from.

Do you know what they are?

They may be obvious to some, but most people live blind to this idea even though they are functioning from this point of action. You may even be one of these people. Don’t worry if you are. It’s not your fault and you can choose to change and take a new path.

So you may be asking yourself what’s the difference?

Here it is…

Running a business as a business has the potential to make you money.

But having a hobby costs you money.

Yes, you heard it right… having a hobby costs most people money.

Take a look at your business and ask yourself…

What mode am I operating my business from?

If you are working from the mode of hobby, no worries, It’s not your fault, and there is hope to turn things around.

Here is what you can do.

Take a good hard look at you hobby run business and ask yourself the following question…

What is it going to take to convert my business from a hobby to a profitable business?

Let me say that again…

A Profitable Business.

You may find when you ask this question that you discover that the business you are in is not the right one for you. If that’s the case, make a business decision to move on and do something else.
