Fear Of Failure Is Overrated!
You have heard it before…
“Failure is not an option”
or my favourite one…
“I have a fear of failure”
To me that sounds like an excuse.
Do we really have a fear of failure or is it just the result of something else that is keeping us stuck.
Sometimes what we think are the roots of a particular issue are in fact the fruits.
We live in a world that is driven by success.
A world that likes to take failure and sweep it under the carpet and make like it never happened.
When I was building my technology business, this was a common issue among many people in the organization. They never wanted to focus on anything that looked like a failure. They missed out on so many great things that they could learn and help them to grow even better. When you think about it, you don’t really learn much from your successes, but your failures have so much to offer. Don’t sweep them under the rug in your business and life.
Seth Godin in his book Tribes discusses the concept “Fear Of Failure Is Overrated”
“Fear of failure is actually overrated as an excuse. Why? Because if you work for someone, then, more often than not, the actual cost of failure is absorbed by the organization, not by you. If your product launch fails, they’re not going to fire you. The company will make a bit less money and will move on.
What people are afraid of isn’t failure. It’s blame. Criticism. We choose not to be remarkable because we’re worried about criticism.
Fear of criticism is a powerful deterrent because the criticism doesn’t actually have to occur for the fear to set in. Watch a few people get criticized for being innovative, and it’s pretty easy to convince yourself that the very same thing will happen to you if you’re not careful.”
So, fear of failure isn’t really fear of failure at all…
It’s fear of being criticized by others.
In the home based business and network marketing arena it is referred to as fear of rejection.
It is what hold so many people back from not even getting started.
What can you do about this?
There are two things that I have come to know as valuable that helped me get over this…
1. Have a strong WHY for what you are doing. One that can make you cry and you can refer to when times are challenging, and they will be in your business, to help keep you moving forward.
2. Just DO IT! Nike had it right when they shared this in their slogan. Just get out their and face your fears and do what you know you need to do to be successful in your business and life.
